Most fox calls in Sussex County are one of two things: a vixen has denned under a shed or porch and there are cubs, or something is going through a chicken run at night. Both are seasonal, and both peak in spring.
Grey fox and red fox both turn up here. They are wary animals and they learn a trap quickly, so location and patience matter more than equipment. A den job also means accounting for cubs before anything gets closed up.
Signs you have a fox
- A dug-out den entrance under a shed, deck or porch
- Cubs seen playing near an outbuilding in spring
- Poultry taken at night, often more than one bird
